This district takes its name from the of the gate which was built in 1870 along the Spanish walls. The Porta Genova district is ideally enclosed by quadrilateral formed by Via Solari, Via Bergognone, Naviglio Grande and Darsena. The hub is the Piazzale of the Porta Genova Station. A bed and breakfast or an apartment for rent to tourists in the Porta Genova area is ideal for getting around the city and to the EXPO, for shopping in a few of the city's most famous thoroughfares, for the night-life and the wine and food options. A gem for lovers of the history of ancient flavors: a must-see is the Vicolo delle Lavandaie where the stones used by the laundresses, who were paid to collect laundry from house to house and return it clean, are still conserved. Each laundress had her own washing stone on which she scoured the laundry.
