One of the easiest and most fascinating districts for finding accommodations at a convenient price in Milan during the EXPO is that of Porta Romana. A symbol of the entire area is that very gate built in 1596 upon the entrance into the city by Margaret of Austria, bride-to-be of Spain's Philip III. If you look at the Spanish walls from the top, you will notice that they have a shape of a heart with the point landing precisely at Porta Romana, Philip III's homage to his bride. Once Porta Romana was the city's only monumental entrance, today the entire district has become the destination of artists, and is rich with galleries and ateliers (the Fondazione Prada dedicated to contemporary art and culture being one to point out). It is also a downright treasure trove of liberty-style buildings.
