To stay in Porta Venezia is to throw yourself into Milan's history. In the past it was called Porta Orientale and was initially designed as a monument by the architect Piermarini. The actual gate was built between was 1827 and 1828, following the design of Rodolfo Vantini. It is the gate through which Renzo Tramaglino in I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed) makes his entrance into Milan. The Giardini di Porta Venezia, today called Giardini Indro Montanelli, are famous and include Palazzo Dugnani, the Civic Museum of Natural History, and the Urlico Hoepli Planitarium. We recommend the Spazio Oberdan, a 700 m2 exhibition area dedicated to hosting photography and art exhibits sponsored by the Province.
