A temple of Italian acting, the Piccolo Teatro di Milano was the country's first stable theatre. It was founded by Paolo Grassi and Giorgio Strehler, and today's director is Luca Ronconi. Located in a small side street off Via Dante, in a pedestrian area of shops and bars connecting the cathedral to the Sforzesco castle, in a key position for urban context. Frescoes by Leonardo and Bramante came to light during restoration of the building, and are now open to the public.
